IBJJF uniform rules
What the inspector checks before you step on the mat, in plain words. Products marked IBJJF legal in this store are made to these rules.
The gi
- One colour only: white, royal blue or black. Jacket and pants the same colour, collar the same colour as the jacket.
- Cotton or a cotton-like fabric, not so thick or stiff that an opponent cannot grip it.
- Sleeves reach to within 5 cm of the wrist with the arms held straight out. Pants reach to within 5 cm of the ankle bone.
- Patches are cotton, fully sewn down, and sit only in the permitted zones.
No-gi
- The top is black, white, or black and white, with at least 10% in the colour of your rank. A top that is 100% your rank colour is also allowed.
- The top is skin-tight and long enough to cover the torso down to the waistband.
- Shorts are black, white, or black and white, with up to 50% in your rank colour. No pockets, or pockets stitched shut. No buttons, zips or exposed drawstrings, nothing made of plastic or metal.
- Shorts fall between mid-thigh and the knee.
The belt
- 4 to 5 cm wide, in the colour of your rank, with a black bar at one end. The black belt carries a red or white bar.
- Tied with a double knot, tight enough to hold the jacket closed, the ends hanging 20 to 30 cm.
